Splashing in Old School Runescape is the most afkable magic training method. Players like to use the splashing method so they can do other stuff while they're still training their Magic with very low intensity. Even though splashing might not give a huge amount of Magic experience, you can easily watch a movie, workout, do your homework, Or anything else while still getting an acceptable amount of Magic experience. The splashing method consists of using Magic to splash a low level target without doing any damage, hence the “splashing” term. In order to do no damage to your target, you need -65 Magic attack. You also want to make sure you're splashing on a target that other players cannot interact with, so players can't ruin your Magic training, but we'll get into that later.

Armour setup

In order to splash targets without doing any damage, you'll need -65 Magic attack. There are two ways to achieve getting -65 Magic attack. First of all, you want to get full plate armour, the plate armour could be anything, it doesn't matter whether it's bronze, rune, steel, etc. As soon as you have the plate armour, you can choose to wear d'hide vambraces which will get you to -65 Magic attack. You can also choose to use a cursed goblin staff, which will also get you to -65 Magic attack. When you have one of these two setups, you should have -65 Magic attack an d shouldn't be able to do any damage to targets with your Magic spells.

Locations an d targets to splash

You can basically choose any location an d target that you like, but there are some things that you should keep in mind. When choosing a target to splash on, make sure that other players cannot interact with the target, for example, when you're splashing on a level 2 Man, other players will be able to pickpocket him an d interfere with your splashing, that's why you want to choose a target that cannot be pickpocketed. You also want to make sure that the target you're splashing won't do any (or minimum) damage on you, since this is an AFK method you rather don't want to pay attention to your hitpoints so you can do other things on the side an d don't have to worry about dying.

When you're a lower level, you can choose to splash on level 2 men Or rats, preferably rats. It has his disadvantages though, because men can be pickpocketed by other players an d rats can be killed by cats, although, it's not very likely that one of these things will happen, an d if it does happen it's very easy to just find another rat Or man. You can find these targets basically anywhere in the world of Old School Runescape. The most common place to splash would be at Lumbridge Castle, due to the high amount of rats.

You can splash on every target you can think of, just make sure that they won't do any damage to you. Another good spot to splash for lower levels is at the chickens in Lumbridge, they're very low level, do no damage if you have some armour an d players cannot interfere with chickens. When you have better armour an d a decent defence level, you can also choose to splash on higher level targets, since they also won't do any damage to you with some proper gear an d a decent defence level.

How to start splashing

It's very easy to start splashing as soon as you've found a target. Make sure you wear a staff so you can use “Auto Retaliate”, this is what makes this method AFKable, because with Auto Retaliate on you don't have to keep attacking the target but you'll do it automatically. You also want to make sure that you bring sufficient runes for your desired spell (we'll get into the best spells to use later on). When you have the runes an d your staff on Auto Retaliate, simply start attacking your target an d let the Magic experience flow in. Every couple of minutes you'll have to show some kind of activity, like rotating your screen Or clicking on the target again in order to prevent getting logged out of the game. Prior to a hidden Update back in 2015, you could splash for 6 hours straight until you were forced to logout, making this method even more afkable. Unfortunately for splashers, they secretly Updated the game an d since then you have to show some kind of activity every few minutes.

What spells to use for splashing

You can use pretty much any spell that you like to start splashing an d training your Magic. When you use higher level spells, it has its advantages an d disadvantages. The higher level the spell is, the more experience you'll get per splash, though higher level spells will also cost you a lot more GP, so you’ll have to see for yourself what spell you'd like to use depending on your Magic level an d how much GP you're willing to spend. Below I've made some calculations of how much experience you get per hour for different spells an d how much GP this will cost you. These calculations have been made assuming you're wearing an air staff.

Fire Strike

When you use Fire Strike, you'll get approximately 13.9K XP per hour. Every splash will cost you 4 GP.

Fire Bolt

Splashing with Fire Bolt will get you approximately 27K XP per hour. Every splash will cost you 101 GP.

Fire Blast

Splashing with Fire Blast will get you approximately 41.3K XP per hour. Every splash will cost you 235 GP.

Fire Wave

Splashing with Fire Wave will get you approximately 50.7k XP per hour. Every splash will cost you 269 GP.

As you can see, when you're using a higher level Magic spell you'll get more experience, but the costs of the runes will be more as well. Therefore, it's all personal preference an d you can choose whatever you prefer if you have plenty of money an d you're willing to spend it on splashing then you can go for Fire Wave an d get an experience rate of 50K for a very afkable method, which isn't bad at all. When you have less money to spend Or your Magic level is lower, you can go for Fire Strike Or Fire Bolt. We hope you enjoyed our OSRS Splashing guide as much as we did making it.
